Aztec LITERACY · 6TH GRADE Name Date Read the passage, then answer the questions below. The Aztecs, who called themselves the Mexica, founded Tenochtitlan on an island in Lake Texcoco around 1325 and built it into a city of perhaps two hundred thousand people, larger than any in Europe at the time. They farmed on chinampas, raised beds of mud and vegetation built up in the shallow lake, which produced several harvests a year. Their empire worked by conquest and tribute: defeated cities kept their own rulers but sent goods and labour to Tenochtitlan, an arrangement that generated the resentment Cortés later exploited. Aztec religion held that the sun required human blood to keep rising, and prisoners taken in war were sacrificed in large numbers. The city fell in 1521 after a siege in which smallpox killed a large part of the population.
