Inca Empire LITERACY · 6TH GRADE Name Date Read the passage, then answer the questions below. The Inca expanded rapidly in the fifteenth century, absorbing dozens of peoples and moving whole populations to break up resistance and spread the Quechua language. Cusco was the capital, and Machu Picchu, a royal estate high above the Urubamba valley, shows the precision of Inca stonework: blocks fitted without mortar so closely that the joints resist earthquakes. Society was organised into ayllu, kin groups holding land in common, and the state redistributed goods rather than using markets or money. Spanish conquest in 1532 succeeded because Francisco Pizarro arrived just as a civil war between two claimants to the throne had ended, and because smallpox had already killed the previous emperor. Andean people kept their languages, farming, and much religious practice under Spanish rule, and Quechua is spoken by millions today.
