Songhai became West Africa's largest empire in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, expanding from its base at Gao under Sunni Ali, who took Timbuktu and Djenné. His successor Askia Muhammad reorganised the state with appointed provincial governors, a professional army, standardised weights and measures, and a legal system based on Islamic law, and he supported the universities of Timbuktu. Songhai controlled the trans-Saharan trade in gold, salt, and enslaved people, and its scale required an administration rather than personal rule. It collapsed unusually quickly in 1591, when a Moroccan army crossed the Sahara with muskets and cannon and defeated a far larger Songhai force armed with spears and bows. The empire's fall is a standard example of how a technological gap can outweigh numbers. Questions: 1 What reforms did Askia Muhammad introduce? 2 What did Songhai control? 3 Why did a smaller Moroccan army defeat Songhai? www.littleactivity.com 7th Grade · Literacy
