Great Zimbabwe was the capital of a southern African kingdom that flourished from about 1100 to 1450, and its ruins cover roughly seven hundred hectares. Its walls, some eleven metres high and five metres thick, were built of granite blocks fitted without mortar, and the Great Enclosure remains the largest ancient structure south of the Sahara. The city controlled trade in gold and cattle and reached the Indian Ocean coast, as Chinese and Persian goods found on the site show. When Europeans encountered the ruins in the nineteenth century, many refused to believe Africans had built them and invented Phoenician or Arab origins, a claim archaeology has thoroughly disproved. The modern country takes its name from the site, which is why the ruins matter politically as well as historically. Questions: 1 What is unusual about how the walls were built? 2 What evidence shows the city traded with the Indian Ocean world? 3 What false claim did some Europeans make about the ruins? www.littleactivity.com 7th Grade · Literacy
