Half of 9 is 4½
9 ÷ 2 = 4½
9 is an odd number, so it does not split into two equal whole groups — 4½ means 4 and a half.
How to find half of 9
- 1Half means splitting 9 into 2 equal groups, so work out 9 ÷ 2.
- 29 is an odd number, so it will not split into two equal whole groups — one group always ends up with one more.
- 3Put 4 in each group and there is 1 left over. Split that last one in half too.
- 4So half of 9 is 4½ — 4 and a half. The even numbers either side, 8 and 10, halve to 4 and 5.
Check it: put the two halves back together and you get 4½ + 4½ = 9.
