Grammar that changes meaning

Can do: Uses commas, apostrophes and consistent tense correctly, and knows when a comma changes the sentence.

Why it matters

By Grade 5 mechanics carry marks, and more importantly ambiguity starts to cost meaning rather than just neatness.

What it looks like when it's wobbly

Tense flips mid-paragraph, apostrophes appear on plurals, and comma splices join everything.

โฑ๏ธ Two-minute check

"Punctuate: lets eat grandma. Now: the dogs bowl."

Solid looks like: Both fixed, and they can say what changed.

Punctuation Changes Everything

PaperPencil
  1. 1Write sentences whose meaning flips with punctuation and let them find both readings.
  2. 2Teach one rule per session โ€” apostrophes for possession this week, tense consistency next.
  3. 3Take their own writing and hunt only for that one rule.
  4. 4Read a paragraph aloud, pausing exactly where the punctuation says to. Errors become audible.
  5. 5Keep a personal error list; most children repeat the same three mistakes forever.

If it's too hard

One rule, five practice sentences.

If it's too easy

Semicolons and dashes, and joining clauses without a splice.

Say this

"Read it exactly as punctuated โ€” pause only at the commas. Did it say what you meant?"
