By Grade 5 mechanics carry marks, and more importantly ambiguity starts to cost meaning rather than just neatness.
What it looks like when it's wobbly
Tense flips mid-paragraph, apostrophes appear on plurals, and comma splices join everything.

Punctuation Changes Everything
- 1Write sentences whose meaning flips with punctuation and let them find both readings.
- 2Teach one rule per session — apostrophes for possession this week, tense consistency next.
- 3Take their own writing and hunt only for that one rule.
- 4Read a paragraph aloud, pausing exactly where the punctuation says to. Errors become audible.
- 5Keep a personal error list; most children repeat the same three mistakes forever.
