31 is an odd number, so it does not split into two equal whole groups — 15½ means 15 and a half.
How to find half of 31
- 1Half means splitting 31 into 2 equal groups, so work out 31 ÷ 2.
- 231 is an odd number, so it will not split into two equal whole groups — one group always ends up with one more.
- 3Put 15 in each group and there is 1 left over. Split that last one in half too.
- 4So half of 31 is 15½ — 15 and a half. The even numbers either side, 30 and 32, halve to 15 and 16.
