23 is an odd number, so it does not split into two equal whole groups — 11½ means 11 and a half.
How to find half of 23
- 1Half means splitting 23 into 2 equal groups, so work out 23 ÷ 2.
- 223 is an odd number, so it will not split into two equal whole groups — one group always ends up with one more.
- 3Put 11 in each group and there is 1 left over. Split that last one in half too.
- 4So half of 23 is 11½ — 11 and a half. The even numbers either side, 22 and 24, halve to 11 and 12.
Check it: put the two halves back together and you get 11½ + 11½ = 23.
